I'm now the Web Video Editor at Coldwater Creek. My first official project was this scarf video. Coldwater Customers have been asking for a scarf tutorial for a while now, so this is what we came up with.

For the geeks who are more interested in video production than scarf tying, I shot this video with the Sony FS-100, 1080 60p. Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro. Time remapping in Premiere is awesome. Color correction and grading were done in Premiere. The trick to getting the colors to really pop is to duplicate the clip to a track above, and use a soft light blending mode, with the opacity of the clip set to about 25%.

Big thanks to Bailey, Jasen, and Al for their help. Home. It was shortly after I returned home from a mission in Ireland, and I was still living with my folks. Like most days, I woke up at 2 pm, switched on the TV and went and took a shower. Yes, I would leave the tube on while I showered, but I like the background noise.

During this whole getting ready ritual I kept noticing the strangest film on the TV. After all, news time was over, so this must be a movie. After my shower, and getting dressed, I sat on the couch to put on my shoes and watch this intriguing movie. It honestly took me 20 minutes of watching before it finally clicked. This was real. Terrorists had hijacked commercial airlines, full of innocent people, and flew them directly into the World Trade Center. I felt sick.

I spent the rest of the day watching the news, searching the internet, and calling people, trying to clarify the shocking barrage of information. I remember talking with my brother on the phone, and he mentioned the significance of the date.

My parents live a few miles from the Mnt. Home Air Force Base. I drove past it every day to get to work. All of the sudden, safety felt like an illusion, as I had visions of terrorist attacks in my back yard.

At work people were angry, sad, and confused. We got about half of the work done we should have that night, due to frequent visits to the employee lounge to watch the news. Many of my fellow employees barked about 'ragheads,' 'sand niggers,' and war. I felt sick again. I've never been a vengeful person, and I was so confused by what had happened. I'm glad I wasn't in charge of the military, because I wouldn't have had the guts to do what needed to be done.

It still sickens me today, 9 years later, to think about the terrorism of 9/11/01. I don't understand the mind of terrorists, and I pray that I never do, because humanity means too much to me.

We are not a perfect society. That's OK. We don't all have to agree on politics, religion, or sports teams to live together. The United State of America is a nation diversity and liberty, the best nation on the planet. I'm so thankful to be a US citizen, even when I don't agree with some government leaders.

I'm a free man, with a loving family, the right to worship according to my conviction, a hard working job that provides for me and mine, and the best military protection in history. Thank you for all of those who live to protect my freedom. Thank God for this country.

Final Cut Studio Wishlist

I shouldn't even be writing this, considering that I burned about $600 upgrading to Final Cut Studio 3, after purchasing and installing Final Cut Studio 2 about two days before FCS 3 was announced (I should have bought from Apple. B&H is great, but they won't let you return opened software. Just paying my dues I guess). I'm not really in a position to spend more money on software, but...

I've got a sinking suspicion that Final Cut Studio is being rewritten. I'm not the only one. So Apple, if you get a chance, please hook me up with the following:
(not in any specific order)

A little tab in between 'Filters' and 'Motion' called 'Color.' Give me a 3-Way CC, RGB and Luma curve editors, and Secondaries. Give me that (and all the processing awesomeness it requires), and never make me leave my NLE to color grade again.

While I'm at it, that 'Motion' tab could use a bit more 'Motion.' Can you build options for 'Behaviors' in that tab? What I'd love even more is some advanced masking options, using b-splines or bezier curves that I can build with the pen tool, and never have to mess around with those clunky '8-point Matte' filters. I think 'Masks' would fit nicely in the 'Motion' tab, and I'd even give up 'Drop Shadow' to have it there :)

Nesting Sequences is great and all, but I'd rather use Folder Tracks, like unto Motion or Nuendo. Give me Folder Tracks to better organize and effect my video and audio clips.

Along those lines, I want Track Effects, like nearly all DAWs have. I want them for audio and for video tracks. Let me mix and match Track Effects and Clip Effects, and key frame them all independently.

Onto filters - very first thing, call up Alex Lindsay and drop a load of cash on his lap for DVMatte Pro. I betcha 90% of FCP editors would key with that plug-in if it came pre-installed. It's fast, and offers excellent quality, allowing morons like me to pull keys with cursed MiniDV footage. (and also DSLR footage)

Can you chill out SmoothCam enough to get him to only analyze the portion of the clip I'm using? I don't like exporting small chunks from long video clips, just so the filter doesn't have to think about footage I'm not using anyway.

Time remapping - your latest tools for this are well appreciated, especially for ramping in and out of remapped clips, but the frame blending thing is a bit weak now days. Can you yoink that Optical Flow option from Motion, and drop it into my favorite NLE? (I mean, come on, Sony Vegas has it). That option would be much appreciated, and like my issue SmoothCam, please don't analyze the whole freakin' clip.

I think that's enough for now. I'm sure there will be more requests to come. I'd like to just say that I'm not really a big fan of round-tripping for small things within Final Cut Studio. That being said, I don't think we need to see an end to a mult-software studio for Final Cut.

There is a big need for a new and improved DVD Studio Pro, with Bluray and other interactive authoring options (take a page from Adobe Encore, but do it much better).

Although I want some more advanced motion options in Final Cut, there is still a need for a high end stand-alone Animation/3D/Compositing program in FCS. Something like a Motion/Shake hybrid. Nodal compositing for dummies, maybe?

Compressor Rules! I don't care how many complaints I read every day about that software, I love it! Editors don't realize the power of that software. It's quick. It's smart. It's a muli-processor loving beast for re-encoding video to nearly every format that matters to me (and if you must know, WMV doesn't matter at all). On top of that, I'm in love with Droplet. It's like Compressor-Lite, yet it still delivers great results. People swear by Squeeze, but I've had better success with Compressor, nine times out of ten. (yes, I use both. Compressor is better, but not perfect). Compressor is a 'must have' as a stand-alone program in Final Cut Studio.

That's the bulk of it, there. Apple should incorporate my suggestions into Final Cut Pro, ditch Soundtrack, drop Color, morph Motion and Shake, actually address DVD Studio Pro, and keep Compressor (and his little friend Droplet).

Oh, and finally, Apple, thanks for making the Final Cut Studio I now know and love. It is an awesome set of tools, with all of the power needed to produce high quality video content. I love the organic nature of Final Cut editing. It makes me feel more like an artist, and less like a button-pushing-teched-out-stick-in-the-mud-editor-by-definition-but-not-by-craft-guy. Keep up the good work!

If there really is anyone out there, feel free to jump in.

Violet Emily Chick

Here is my new beautiful daughter!

Born March 9, 2010 @ 5:30pm.

Champion!

I started working out on a heavy bag earlier this week. It makes me feel tough, but I'm glad it doesn't punch back. Anywhose, I decided to bring my camera out to shoot some possible stock footage of a silhouetted fella punching a bag. I pointed the porch light through our lattice and got real mean with the punches. When it was all said and done, it just made me laugh. So I decided to put it together to an awesome song by the White Barons. Here's "Heavy Bag" edit to the song, "Never Enough."

I look at it as a tribute to all of those awesome sports movies where there's a training scene set to great music, like Rocky. I feel like Rocky. After reviewing this footage I've come to the solid conclusion that I'm one bad dude. I think I'll pick a fight tomorrow.

I hope someone else gets a kick out of this. I think it's funny, and I know my kids sure think it's funny. My wife thinks it's hot, and maybe some of you will too :)

Laters

KC Slider Videos

I've had an awesome time doing video work for the KC Slider! It's not a run-n-gun, over the shoulder, servo-zoom, back-focusing beast like many great video cameras, but it does shoot some beautiful video. I love the shallow depth of field, the color rendition, and the organic look it seems to give to shots, that otherwise seemed cold and static with even good quality miniDV and HDV camcorders. But that's not really what this post is about.

I've embedded two videos to this post. I took the 7D to Mesa Falls a few weeks ago with some friends, and decided to get some footage. The time of year was right, and I was blessed with excellent cloud cover. The shots are beautiful! The first video is my initial edit of the footage, and the second is the same thing after some color grading, 'Smooth Cam' filtering, and general tightening of the edits.

The point I'm getting at is that finishing a project isn't just slamming your edits together and rendering a file, or printing to tape. If you take time to sweeten the colors, refine the edits, and fix your shots to the best of your ability, you can come away with an edit that makes that extra step toward professional, and beautiful.

If you shoot and edit videos and you haven't been focusing on some of these important finishing techniques, I command you to get learned immediately! You will find that proper finishing will make all of the difference in your work.

PS - Go to Vimeo to watch it in 720p!

New Video Camera

I feel like we are on the verge of some amazing video cameras coming through the woodwork. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas, even though it's months away. RED has been promising the amazing Scarlet cameras for years now, and Canon is about half a step shy of an incredible solution. Do these guys hold back on purpose?

I had the opportunity to shoot some interviews with the RED One a few months ago, and I've just recently had time to take a look at the footage. I must say that I'm very impressed, not only with the resolution, but also with the color rendition. I've heard a lot of guys talk a little trash about it, but coming from the cameras I get to use, it is a huge upgrade! So I'm itching for the Scarlet models to arrive. The sad thing is that even when they are released, I'm sure I'd have to wait on a list for months to get one.

So Canon has really captured the hungry filmmaker market with the 5D Mark II. This is a professional, 35mm full-frame, Digital SLR still camera that is capable of shooting absolutely beautiful HD video at 30 progressive frames per second. This camera is amazing, both as a still camera and a video camera! It does fall a little short in some areas, so I'm told. So Canon heard the masses and built the 7D. This puppy is almost the answer for me. The specs are impressive. It has a nice big sensor (though not full-frame, but who cares) which offers the option for a very shallow depth of field. It shoots 1080 24p at around 40 mbps (higher than XDCam EX). It even shoot 720 60p for sharp motion, or to be nicely slowed down in post. Oh yeah, and it's under $2,000, which is like a fraction of what most high quality prosumer video cameras run, and they can't make pictures quite like the 7D.

But! There are plenty of things the 7D isn't, and most of all, it isn't a real video camera. I mean, although it can shoot more beautiful footage than almost another other camera in a huge ballpark price range, it doesn't have some of the luxuries of a 'run-n-gun' style video camera (scopes, servo zoom, balanced audio inputs, it's pretty tiny too). Much of this can be remedied with a few extra purchases, but dang me, I don't want to have to buy a bunch of stuff for it. I want it to be a video camera.

So when will Canon announce the ground breaking video camera that utilizes the same imaging technology as the 7D, but includes all of the perks video guys like? It's almost as if the video department and the photography department haven't been on speaking terms for awhile. Honestly, I haven't been too impressed with Canon's video camera offerings, ever. I have to shoot with an XL2 from time to time, and it kind of makes me sick. For reals, that camera is way overrated, and I believe it was when it came out too. Canon now has an opportunity to really grab a hold of the prosumer video market, but they wait! Why?

I hope they break the news tomorrow. I hope RED puts full frame chips in their cheapest Scarlet. I hope JVC, Panasonic, and Sony offer something that just blows the socks off of these Teasers, both in features and price (doubtful though, :( I still love you Sony). Dang dudes, give me an EX 3 with a RED sized chip that records RAW data, for under $10,000, and I'll become the poster child! Oh yeah, that's what RED said they were going to do, like 2 years ago. I'm not mad at you RED, just super anxious. Please quit leading us on.

The technology is here. Forget about 3D for like 6 months and get us some film making machines! It can be beautiful, and it can be affordable, if you build it, we will come!

KC Slider Teaser Video

KC Slider Teaser from Nels Chick on Vimeo.

I just finished this demo video for the KC Slider. Something capable of producing professional images, yet won't brake the bank. I've done a lot of homework on the subject and I've narrowed it down to a couple of choices.

Sony's EX 1 - $6k
or
Panasonic's HMC150 - $3.5k

Alright, I know you are thinking, "That's a big price difference. If it's between those two, just get the cheaper one." That almost makes good sense, but there are a lot of factors I'm considering here.

I don't think anyone is going to argue that the Sony EX1 will produce a sharper image, with a more shallow depth of field, due to the bigger, full raster imaging sensor. I got to shoot with with an EX3 (EX1's big brother) for an event at the Sheridan Ranch (thanks again Brian!). Everything looked beautiful! The EX3 has some nice features over the EX1, but in the end the imaging guts are the same, so I can get the same gorgeous results for $2k less. It really is an awesome camera.

The reason I'm considering the Panasonic HMC150 is really to save some money. Try and follow this logic. According to some pros, the Panasonic HVX170 (pretty much an indie film standard now, $5k) can sit side by side with the EX1 in quality, or at least close enough (you know, like horseshoes). The Panny fans also boast prettier skin detail and color on this camera. I've never shot with it, but I do have a friend who could remedy that as well. Now you're asking, "Why not get the HVX170 instead of the HMC150 then?"

I've heard some other pros say that the HMC150 can hold it's own against the HVX170! And guess what? The HMC150 has the same guts as the HVX170! The big difference is the compression each camera puts out. Files from the HMC150 are much more compressed than files from the HVX170. But honestly, the pictures look just as good, so who cares. I'm not interested in arguing about the difference between AVCIntra and DVCPro HD, the pictures don't lie. That's why I'd buy an HMC150 over and HVX170, same picture quality for 1.5 fewer G's.

I've watched some footage of both the EX1 and the HMC150 (and HVX170) on Vimeo.com, and I can see a difference between the Sony and the Panny. The EX1 is definitely sharper, and has more latitude (looks nicer in dark and light areas of the picture). But the HMC150 looks perty nice, too! Definitly softer, but it kind of has that "street" look. As far as colors go, I really don't have any opinion one way or another. I think the hype about Panasonic's voodoo is a load of crap. Some folks are just fanboys. So the question is, how good is good enough? Neither camera is top shelf. Both cameras are capable of making some nice pictures. Do I need that little extra that the EX1 provides? I'd like to have it, but will it really make a $2.5k difference?

Alright DV Rebels, you're right, the camera is just a tool. Content is what matters, and a skilled cinematographer can make engaging scenes with almost any camera. That being said, is there any one of us that doesn't want something a little bit better? There are a lot of cameras that can get you 80% or 90% there. It's always that last 10% that's the hardest.

I've been leaning toward the EX1 for a long time. I believe it does add that that the HMC150 lacks. I just have to ask myself if I need that little something little something right now, or if my first prosumer grade camera can be a little less pro, and a little more 'sumer. It definitely re-lit "my fire." I became a huge Doors fan in high school, mostly due to my friends Andrew and Philip, who were also huge Doors fans.

The Doors are one of the greatest bands of all time! They are so unique and masterful. The video I watched offered a great view of who the band really was. In a time of flower power and free love, the Doors told a much darker, richer story.

Much of that had to do with the lyrics and voice of Jim Morrison. The man was incredible! I don't think there has been any musical performer to have the same presence on stage or on an album. Drummer, John Densmore, makes a point of expressing to people that although Jim's genius was plagued with self-destruction, talent doesn't have to be that way. That was cool.

I think it's important to realized the musical genius of the band. All extremely talented and refined musicians. Without them, Jim Morrison was just a spoken word poet. The band explore so many ways of combining great music to create new expressions. I didn't know that most of their first album was recorded live in the studio, no over dubs. Impressive, because that album rules!

What ever your current oppinion is of the Doors, you might as well take another look. If anyone knows how to get a copy of the VH1 Classic special, "Classic Albums: the Doors," let me know. Here's one of my favorites:

Soul Kitchen [New Stereo Mix] (Advanced Resolution) - The Doors

SONGSMITH!!!

So Microsoft has developed a cool new piece of software that will let you sing a tune, and it will build a song around your singing. It's called Songsmith, and I'm not kidding. Now, the promo I saw for it was ridiculous, but I think this would be a lot of fun for kids. I think it would be a great console program.

The best part is that some folks have taken vocal tracks from popular songs, and used Songsmith to mash it up. Behold:

This was by far the best I've seen, but there are a lot more of these mash-ups on YouTube. I also .
like "Roxanne" by the Police, "In Bloom" by Nirvana, and of course "Battery" by Metallica.

Wes if you had anything to do with this, my hat is off to you!

In Convenience for sale on Amazon.com!

Of course I'm thrilled! Well, that's one opinion.

Just like my photography teacher who felt this picture lacked detail:

It's kind of a rule of photography to maintain as much latitude in an image as possible, meaning there should be detail in the brightest whites and the darkest blacks. I loved that teacher, even though he discounted this image and lowered my grade. He admitted that some of his grading was based on his own taste. After an initial critique, he gave me the opportunity to improve any of my submissions, but I chose to resubmit this picture the way it is, knowingly lowering my grade.

It's so beautiful.

All the Same to Me - Lucero

Real Character

Vote for whomever you want. Just be honest with yourself, ok. If not voting for someone because he's black is racist, I say that voting for him just because he is black is also racist. He hasn't won my vote, and it has nothing to do with his ethnicity.

I can't say that any of the candidates currently running have great strength of character. It shows in the back-and-forth "mud-slinging," which has absolutely nothing to do with being qualified to lead a nation. It seems they are all simply saying, "Vote for me by default, because the other guy is terrible!"

What kind of message is that?! Take a good look at the issues, but also take a close look at the behavior these people display. Don't rely on what the other person would have you believe. Make an honest decision.

I'm not really into politics, but I think it's important to be aware and actively voting for what we believe will be best for our communities and country. The sad thing is that the whole political machine is a lot like high school, and it's very easy to be manipulated into something you really didn't want to do, but were too afraid to do anything about. Don't be a wussy.

I send my loves.

Conception

*Spoiler* (This is not a post about sex or having kids, unless Brainchild means anything to you) *Spoiler*

Have you seen Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog? Well you can see the entire 42:26 right here:

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

The reason I ask is that myself, and some friends, feel that web-shows could be cool, like the above mentioned. Most of what's on YouTube, or whatever user upload site have you, is lousy. I enjoy seeing a nun face-plant on a half-pipe while singing Chocolate Rain, or Never Gonna Give You Up, almost as much as the next guy, but man can't live on bloopers alone. The quality of creative entertainment is still held strong by the popularity machine.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of instances of online success by "less than celebrity" status folks. But for the most part, people are producing lame crap. Dr. Horrible's is one of the first web-shows to dispel the funk about using the web as a high quality medium for films. But, but, but, Joss Whedon and Doogie have some popular clout.

Can a nobody produce a good web-show, and get recognition? I'm not convinced, but I'd like to try. Thus the title of this post, Conception.

"I've got this idea for a story," could be the introductory phrase of a show I've been thinking about for that last month or so. The premise of the show is that a screenwriting group gets together and discusses their ideas, which are all bizarre and hilarious, unbeknown to those in the group. One character will always pitch a drama, one a romance, one a period piece, etc. As each character pitches, we will be blessed with a stylized "dream sequence",and the other characters will interject their own ideas, which will interject their story styles into the sequence. I wish I had a pilot to show you, but I'm still in the first trimester.

Anyway, I think I'll begin writing soon, but I have to develop characters. I'm hoping for humor and comedy. For some reason the dudes in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest come to mind, with a much less intense setting. Let me know if anyone who reads this post (that means you Honey) would like to see this idea put into action, or if it will just be more worthless crap taking up bandwidth. I'm tough, I can take it.

Later.

iTunes Celebrity Playlists

I'm hooked. I've spent the last hour checking out the favorite songs of some of my favorite celebrities on iTunes. What's amazing to me is that so many of the actors or musicians I enjoy, also share similar musical interests. Maybe you're thinking, "What's the big deal, they just put up what's popular." Not true. In fact many of these people seem to go out of their way to educate others about lesser known music, stuff that means a little more to them.

So I found that the only music I know on Rainn Wilson's playlist is Ryan Adams (not to be confused with Brian Adams, who sucks), but I dig just about everything I heard.

Michael Cera likes Built to Spill, which I finally got into three years ago and now love.

I'm impressed by how many celebrities love Neil Young and David Bowie!

Most of all, I was impressed with Jason Lee's selection. One of my favorite songs I recently discovered through Pandora was on his playlist. This song is awesome:

Celebrity playlists on iTunes is an awesome idea. Just being a part of it would be a greater reason for me to want to be a celeb, than fame or fortune. Maybe you blogites and figure out a good way to do a playlist sharing thingy. Maybe I should just put a bunch of songs that I like in a post, and if you're wasting any time at all on my blog, you can check out what I've been listening to most recently. Good idea Nels!

What's on the pod:

<param name="movie" Special thanks to my Bro Levi for being a huge influence in my music discovery. Also, many of these songs I found by participating in the music genome project on Pandora.com.

PS. I better represent some Bowie, since I brought it up and I had Neil Young. I used to play this song with the Young Republicans.

Why don't I blog?

Because I'm very lazy.

Nervous Energy

A friend of mine told me that I should re-channel my nervous energy. This trailer is for a film I've been working on for over two years, "In Convenience." We are finally finishing it up, and preparing to get into some local theaters and sell some DVD's. If you want to know more about the movie please visit the official website at:

www.inconveniencethemovie.com

There is also a higher quality trailer there to look at.

Let me know what you think. I really want to get the word out about this, so please tell everyone you know to watch it. It would be a great help to some hungry film makers.
